Fayette County High School Hall of Fame inducts class of 2010

Fayetteville, Georgia - March 6, 2010 - Saturday night, March 6th, the Fayette County High School Hall of fame held its class of 2010 induction ceremony. Inducted were 6 members of the Sports Hall of Fame and 3 Distinguished Alumni.

Craig Uhle, FCHS class of 1986. He was a 3 year letterman in soccer and a 2 year letterman in Basketball. Craig continued his basketball career playing 2 years at Southern Union Jr. College and then starting for two years at Virginia Commonwealth University where he earned a BS in Marketing. He also played 1 year of professional basketball for Club Trouville in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Mike Linch, FCHS class of 1987. Played baseball from 1984-87, three year letter winner under Head Coach Glen Lindsey. He finished high school career 21-9 with a 1.94 ERA. Played for Liberty University from 1988-1990 for former New York Yankee great, Bobby Richardson. Mike was a three year letter winner for Liberty University and was a starter & reliever during this time. He led the team in saves for 2 seasons while he was there.

Steve Cole, FCHS class of 1989. Steve was a three year letter winner in both football and track. He was voted All-South Metro team place kicker in 1986 and Most Valuable receiver in 1987. Steve walked on as a place kicker at the University of Alabama in 1989. While at the University of Alabama he was a two year letterman in football and a member of the SEC Championship teams in 1989 and 1992. He was also a member of the Alabama football National Championship team in 1992. He presently is the Athletic Director/Assistant Principal at McIntosh High School.

Andy Thompson, FCHS class of 1996. He was a four year letter winner in soccer and 1 year letter winner in Football. He was a member of 2 state semi-final soccer teams (1994 and 1996) and was first team all state soccer his senior year. Andy played soccer for four years at Mars Hill College where he was named All-American in 1998 and led the NCAA division II in goal scoring in 1998. Andy was inducted into the Mars Hill Hall of Fame in 2006 and into the South Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame in 2009. After his playing days Andy was the head soccer coach at Wingate University before returning to Fayetteville to a coaching position with AFC Lightning.

Diana Ramage, FCHS class of 2000. Diana was a four year letter winner in Golf. Diana was the 1999 Georgia Junior Girls State Champion and was selected as an AJGA second team All-American in 1999. Diana led Fayette County High School’s Ladies Golf team to a runner-up finish in the State tournament in 2000 with the lowest round of the tournament (73) in any classification. Diana played golf at Auburn for five years (due to injury) and was named a pre-season All-American in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. Diana twice won the ACC/SEC Challenge tournament. Diana Turned pro in July of 2005 and won the Yamaha Georgia Women’s Open. She then earned her LPGA tour card on her first attempt for the 2006 season.

Glenn Walker, FCHS Coach 1968-1993. Coach Walker taught Social Studies and was the Head Girls Basketball Coach at FCHS from 1968 to 1980. He also served as an assistant coach in Football, Baseball, and Track. Coach Walker’s Basketball teams were region champions in 1977 and 1978 while making three trips to the State playoffs in 1975, 1977 and 1978. Coach Walker was named Region Coach of the year in 1977 and 1978. Coach Walker also served as the Academic Bowl Coach and later was the Social Studies Coordinator for Fayette County from 1993-2000.

Distinguished Alumni members of the Fayette County High School Hall of Fame class of 2010 are:

Mrs. Geraldine Stinchcomb, FCHS Class of ’33. Mrs. Stinchcomb was known as the “shot-lady”. She served Fayette County as its first Public Health Nurse beginning in 1948. She continued to serve the county’s health services well into the 1990s. Mrs. Stinchcomb was married to former Fayette County Sheriff, Hugh Stinchcomb, and raised three children, all FCHS graduates. She also had nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She passed away in November 2008.

Mr. Lester Bray, attended FCHS between 1941 and 1943, is the brother of Distinguished Alumni Huie Bray. After a four year stint with the U.S. Air Force, which included a combat tour in Korea, Mr. Bray worked for Delta Airlines in a variety of maintenance positions for the next 40+ years. His brilliant career with Delta culminated as General Manager of Engine Program Development and Analysis. As a dedicated advisor for the Fayette County Master Gardener’s “Plant a Row for the Hungry Project”, he distinguished himself as the catalyst for the program which provides over 27,000 pounds of produce annually to numerous charities in the local area. Mr. Bray and his wife, Charlotte (FCHS Class of ’48), raised three daughters, all FCHS graduates, and have four grandsons and one granddaughter.

Mr. Jack Dettmering, was a student at FCHS from 1943 to 1946, is the third member of his family to be recognized as a Fayette County High School Distinguished Alumni. A Navy veteran, he led a distinguished 40 year career with the B.F. Goodrich Company before becoming a local small business owner for over 15 years. It was his untiring and loyal service to the City of Fayetteville for 25 years that mark his greatest achievements. After serving five years on the City Council, he served the next 20 (1968-1988) as Fayetteville’s Mayor, guiding it through an extraordinary period of growth and change. Mayor Dettmering was married to the former Mary Whitlock (FCHS Class of ’48) and raised three daughters, all FCHS graduates. Additionally, he was the proud granddad to seven grandchildren. Mr. Dettmering passed away in October 2008.
